Why RS485? Applications of RS485 with Modbus

RS485 is a commonly used communication protocol in the industry. In this article, I will explain the basics of RS485 and its applications.

RS485

RS485 is a two-wire communication protocol that is used to connect various types of industrial devices. It is a reliable, low-cost technology that enables long-distance communication.

RS485 with sensors and Modbus

There are RS485 output sensors in the market. We can use those sensors in a Modbus. Modbus is an open standard communications protocol that is used to connect industrial devices. It provides a reliable and efficient method of monitoring and controlling multiple devices in the industry.

Long-distance bus communication

RS485 is a good option for long-distance bus communication. It is reliable, cost-effective, and supports up to 32 devices on a network. The maximum cable length that can be used is 1200 meters at a data rate of 10 Mbit/s.

Some other options — Fiber-optic cables and wireless networks

Suitable Applications

  • If we need to use multiple sensors to monitor soil properties, RS485 Modbus is ideal. (Agriculture, Construction field, etc)
  • Factory Automation. (The Factories that are using PLC as the controller can use RS485 for multiple-device communication using a bus)
  • Medical Field.
